Abstract

It is found that dimethylsulfoxide as additive to the cooking liquor under alkaline and kraft pulping intensifies the delignification process not as supernucleophile, but mainly as a source of softer nucleophile S2- , as well as CH3 S- , SO3 2- and methylsulfur compounds CH3SCH3 and CH3S2CH3 , formed in the alkaline condition under heating with wood chip as a result of complex hydrolytic and oxidation-reduction reactions.
