Abstract

Changes in spruce stands on Medvezhy (Oshdimylk) and Pymvashor forest islands in the east of Bolshezemelskaya tundra (Adzva River basin) have been studied by means of  repeated landscape photographs method (pictures dated 1909 and 2010). Last century saw a expansion of forest islands, rapid increase in density and height of stands as well as formation of closed forest communities and sparse forests in place of open tree stands. Similar processes have been identified in a number of mountain and tundra regions of Northern Eurasia, which is related to the present climate warming.
