We have studied dimerization of linoleic acid – key component of hardwood tall oil – and the oil itself with zinc chloride at the temperature of 120–140 °C. The products obtained were analyzed using high resolution mass spectrometer Bruker microTOF HR MS (ESI) and 1H-NMR spectroscopy. The mathematical model of linoleic acid dimerization by the action of zinc chloride was developed using tri-factorial second-order B-design. Under optimal conditions at the temperature of 140 °C, heating time of 5 hours and addition of 10 % zinc chloride, unsaturated tall oil fatty acids converted into dimers by 91–97 %.Authors
